EG VS. WG FRIDAY @ 7 IN WOODWARD
East Greene advanced to the Class 1A regional volleyball semifinals with a definitive 25-11, 25-19, 25-23 blowout of Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg) tonight in quarterfinal action at Burnside.
This sets up a “Battle of the Hawkettes” (and the “Greens”) as the Hawkettes of EG (green and white school colors) travel to Woodward to face 10th-ranked Woodward-Granger in a semifinal tilt on the WG Hawkettes’ (green and gold) home court in Woodward at 7 p.m. on Friday night, Oct. 28.
WG rolled over Madrid 25-9, 25-14, 25-17 in a quarterfinal match tonight in Woodward. The WG Hawkettes, winners of the West Central Conference, with a perfect 9-0 record, improved to 18-5. The EG Hawkettes improved to 10-15.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: This is a big win for the Hawkettes and shows they are really peaking at the right time. A tough non-conference slate that included matches against teams like Guthrie Center and Coon Rapids-Bayard—both ranked during the season—has paid off.
EG is the lone Rolling Hills Conference team still playing as Adair-Casey was beaten at home tonight by Earlham, another West Central team, 17-25, 25-17, 25-12, 28-26. Earlham (17-6) advances to a semifinal face-off with Coon Rapids-Bayard (22-8), a quarterfinal winner over Guthrie Center, 25-21, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, on Friday night in Guthrie Center.
The Guthrie Center and Woodward semifinal winners advance to the Region 5 final on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Adel.
Jefferson-Scranton dropped its 2A quarterfinal match to Roland-Story in Roland, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.

Hawkettes Advance to Regional Quarterfinal
SWEEP SWG IN 3; FACE NEH TONIGHT @ BURNSIDE
East Greene swept Southeast Webster-Grand in three games to get a key regional volleyball victory on SWG’s home court in Burnside on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The Hawkettes’ 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 win moved them on to the quarterfinal round tonight against Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg). EG returns to Burnside for the 7 p.m. match.
NEH beat CAL (Latimer) 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 on its home court Oct. 19 to advance. NEH (6-16) finished in a tie for 8th place at 2-6 with CAL and Dunkerton in the 11-team Iowa Star Conference. Tripoli, the No. 1 team in Class 1A and defending three-time state champion, won the Iowa Star with an 8-0 mark. Sixth-ranked Janesville (26-10) tied with North Tama for second place (behind Tripoli) in the Iowa Star. Those two teams square off tonight in Janesville in Region 7.
The Hawkettes improved their season record to 9-15 with the win over SWG, a team they lost to in four games in the season opener, also at Burnside. SWG finished the season 4-18.
The winner tonight advances on to the semifinal round on Friday at Woodward against the winner of a match tonight in Woodward between Madrid (9-12) and 10th-ranked Woodward-Granger (17-5). Madrid advanced with a very close win over Colo-Nesco 15-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14 while WG rolled over Ankeny Christian 25-9, 25-17, 25-14.
Action in the other side of the Region 5 bracket tonight has Coon Rapids-Bayard (21-8) at 15th-ranked Guthrie Center (15-7) and Earlham (16-6) at Adair-Casey (18-10). Those winners square off Friday at Guthrie Center. Semifinal winners advance to the Region 5 final next Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Adel.
EYE ON GJ: This was a real solid turnaround for the Hawkettes and showed how much they have improved throughout the season. The season opening loss to the Eagles was not really all that close—25-12, 12-25, 25-14, 25-21—although the Hawkettes showed some promise for the season to come with that 25-12 win in the second game. To head back to Burnside in the post-season and come away with a solid three-zip sweep says a lot for how far this young team (no seniors and just two juniors and the rest freshman and sophomores) has come in the 2011 season.
East Greene was a bright spot in an otherwise pretty dismal showing for the Rolling Hills Conference. Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton was sidelined by CRB in a play-in round game last Monday night in Coon Rapids. CRB then dispatched of Glidden-Ralston, RH regular season runner-up with Adair-Casey, on Wednesday. Iowa Christian, winner of both the regular season and conference tournament titles, was beaten handily by Martensdale-St. Mary’s in Martensdale in its Region 4 opener, 25-12, 12-25, 25-14, 25-21.
Paton-Churdan, CAM and Ankeny Christian all lost their opening matches in Region 5 while the same fate befell Orient-Macksburg and Walnut in Region 3.
The only other RH team besides EG to post a win in regional opening round action was Adair-Casey, runner-up in the regular season standings and the conference tourney. The Bomberettes got by Grandview Park Baptist in a very tight match, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 15-6. This was a pretty significant win, though, as GPB had advanced to the state tourney the last three years in addition to appearances in 2006 and 2002, the Defenders’ state championship season.
Jefferson-Scranton advanced in 2A with an easy win over Prairie Valley (Gowrie) in Jefferson, 25-13, 25-9, 25-19. The Rams head to Story City tonight for a quarterfinal contest against No. 15 Roland-Story, which rolled over Ogden, 25-13, 25-10, 25-13. Ogden is in its first season in the West Central Conference—East Greene’s former league—and found the going pretty rocky as the Bulldogs were 0-9 in conference play along the way to posting an 0-24 volleyball season.
The West Central as a conference fared much better, going 6-4 with one of the losses coming at the hands of a league member, Panorama, to another, Des Moines Christian, in 2A. Also losing in 2A were West Central Valley (Stuart) and Van Meter with all five 1A schools advancing: Guthrie Center, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Earlham, Madrid and Woodward-Granger.
If Jefferson-Scranton gets by the Norse tonight in Story City, the Rams would play in Jefferson in a 2A semifinal match Friday against Kuemper (Carroll) or East Sac County (Lake View).

Hawkettes Fall Short in Regional Semis
LOSE BY 4 POINTS TO RCL IN JEFFERSON
East Greene came close to playing for a berth in the state tournament, but a valiant effort against Rockwell City-Lytton came up short, 36-32, in a regional semifinals game in Jefferson on Friday, Feb. 19. The Hawkettes ended the season at 10-13 while RCL advanced to the Region 3 championship game against Lynnville-Sully in Ames.
The Hawkettes had advanced to the regional semifinal matchup after disposing of Glidden-Ralston in Glidden on Tuesday, 36-19 in the quarterfinal while RCL had upset Northeast Hamilton, ranked 12th in the state, 49-47, in Rockwell City. Northeast Hamilton came into the game with a 20-2 record and co-champions of the Iowa Star Conference.
The Hawkettes took command early in Glidden and were up 10-4 and 19-11 at the quarter and half breaks. EG poured it on in the third period, holding the Wildcats to just 2 points, and putting the game out of reach with a 32-13 lead at the end of the period. EG rested its starters the rest of the way in preparation for Friday’s game against RCL.
Malarie Gilley and Molly Neese proved to a formidable 1-2 punch for the Hawkettes. Gilley had 15 points, 9 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 steals, and Neese had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Jessie Beaman added 6 points, and Tia Lowe and Katlynn Gannon each added 2.
The game was a defensive battle as evidenced by EG’s 24 turnovers and the 26 miscues by GR. Key to the Hawkettes defensive attack were Beaman’s 7 rebounds and 5 steals and Lowe’s 6 rebounds and 6 steals. The Hawkettes outrebounded GR 35-20 while limiting the Wildcats to just 8 of 46 field goals, a very chilly 17%. GR connected on 1 of 6 three-point attempts and was just 2-7 at the free throw line for 29%.
EG was good on 15 of 40 two-point shots for 38% and misfired on two three-point shots. The Hawkettes had some trouble at the free-throw line, dropping just 6 of 18 attempts, for 33%.
The semifinal game was originally scheduled to be played in Boone, but then was moved to Gilbert, and then when it became clear that Rockwell City and Grand Junction are at a considerable distance from Gilbert, the IGHSAU moved the game to Jefferson.
East Greene had fallen to RCL in a non-conference game in Rockwell City on Saturday, Jan. 30 by 13 points, 46-33, so the Hawkettes knew they had their work cut out for them in this rematch. In the first game, senior Brenna Lantz, an All-Twin Lakes Conference 1st team selection last year, and sophomore Bailey Dettman proved to be a powerful 1-2 force, scoring 14 and 10 points respectively with Lantz pulling down a big 14 rebounds.
The EG team that took the court in Jefferson against the Wildcats was much improved, this timing holding Dettman to just 6 points. Lantz scored 18 but was held to just 4 boards.
The Hawkette defense held RCL in check for three quarters, but the Wildcats put up 14points in the last period, although the outcome was still in doubt with 30 seconds left in the game. The victory was doubly sweet for the Wildcats, as coach Dave Birks picked up his 400th career win.
Birks’ victory total will stay at 400, at least until next season, as the Wildcats suffered a tough 49-47 loss to Lynnville-Sully in the regional final Monday night in Ames, ending their season at 13-10. Lynville-Sully (18-6) advanced to the state tournament and will take on Martensdale-St. Mary’s (25-1) tomorrow, March 1, in a 5 p.m. first-round game at Wells-Fargo Arena. Exira (23-0), champions of the Rolling Hills Conference, also qualified for the 1A State Tournament and will open the six-day event with a 10 a.m. tip-off tomorrow against Prince of Peace (17-7) of Clinton. Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Exira were ranked 1-2 in the final IGHSAU basketball poll for Class 1A.

Sure, a 10-13 season could be indicative of a “losing” season--one that ended “under .500.” But EG plays in the super-tough West Central Conference against teams from such storied girls basketball towns as Guthrie Center and Coon Rapids and emerging basketball programs like West Central Valley and Des Moines Christian.
When the regular season ended this year, more than 130 “small school” teams entered into regional competition with the goal to secure one of the coveted 8 spots in the 1A state tournament in Des Moines in March.
The fact that of those 130-plus teams, East Greene was just one of 32 to make it to the regional semifinals speaks volumes about this team and the school district it represents. EG was by far the smallest school (based on enrollment) in the West Central Conference, but of the 10 teams, the Hawkettes--only 9 members strong across all four high school grades--finished 5th, a coveted “upper division” finish. This is especially commendable considering that EG was competing among some of the largest 2A schools and a highly ranked 1A private school (Des Moines Christian) that is not limited by geographic or social pressures that impact schools like East Greene.
Senior Malarie Gilley ended her EG basketball career as the all-time best player in East Greene’s five-player era with more than 1,000 rebounds, 1,000 points, and 300 blocks during her career wearing the Green and White. She takes her place among the all-time greats in both the five- and six-player eras who preceded her from EG, Dana, GJ and Rippey such as Pam Slock, Doris June Thornburgh, Margaret Burke, Kathryn Clark, Norma Hillman, Kathy Kennedy, Sherri Peterson, Marlene Rueter, Linda Borgeson, Annie Fagen, Jessie Fagen, and Stephanie Hillman.

HAWKETTES ADVANCE, NOW 14-6
EG Faces No. 12 Southern Cal in Regional VB Action
A win over Madrid in the second round of regional volleyball action last Wednesday has put EG into the quarterfinal round tonight in Lake City, where the Hawkettes will square off against Southern Cal, the 12th ranked team in Class 1A.
EG’s 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 regional win at Madrid on Wednesday was the its second straight win over the Tigerettes. EG had swept Madrid in three straight games the previous Thursday in Rippey in both teams’ final regular season match, 25-16, 25-16, 25-13. That capped off a busy week, as EG had downed Panorama in three straight on Tuesday, following a 2-2 showing in 4 matches at a tournament in Walnut on Saturday.
EG has now won 5 of its last 7 matches. The win over Madrid in Rippey moved the Hawkettes to 6-3 in the final West Central Conference standings, good for fourth place. Last week’s win over Madrid in the regionals upped EG’s overall season mark to 14-6.
Southern Cal brings a 21-0 record into tonight’s match. The Mustangs swept Paton-Churdan 25-16, 25-6, 26-24 in regional action at Lake City last Wednesday.
The winner of tonight’s EG-SoCal match will take on the winner of Ar-We-Va vs. West Harrison in the semifinal round Friday at Denison. The opposite side of the bracket has Exira, ranked seventh in the state, taking on Coon Rapids-Bayard in Coon Rapids. The winner of that match moves onto the other Region 3 semifinal on Friday in Woodbine against the winner of tonight’s Woodbine and St. Albert’s match in Council Bluffs.
The semifinal winners will face off next Tuesday in Denison in the regional final. The winner moves on to the State Tournament in Cedar Rapids.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: This is one of the best--if not the best--volleyball season in EG school history. Coach Carly Tiffany has the Hawkettes firing on all cylinders, as they beat 6 of 9 competitors in the West Central Conference in three-game sweeps (best-of-five game matches), and lost by just two points in the fifth game of a five-game match against league champion Guthrie Center, the closest any league team came to the Tigerettes. The Hawkettes also beat CRB--last year’s West Central champion and a 1A state qualifier--twice this season, the first win coming in the championship of a tournament hosted by CRB.
EG will meet a seasoned team in Southern Cal. Like the Hawkettes, SoCal plays in a league comprised of both 1A and 2A teams, where they finished second at 5-1, losing only to East Sac, a 2A team, but coming back to win the conference tournament. The Mustangs made it to State two years ago and just lost out on a trip last year, falling to Schaller-Crestland in the region finals.
Southern Cal and Exira (19-5), the Rolling Hills champion, are clearly the favorites in Region 3.
In addition to CRB in the opposite bracket in Region 3, the other top teams in the West Central are still in action heading into the quarterfinal round tonight. Each of the other top three teams is competing in different classes and regions, so conceivably the West Central could send four teams to the state tournament in 1A and 2A. Des Moines Christian (22-3), which finished third in the conference at 7-2, hosts Iowa Christian (14-10), the runner-up in the Rolling Hills Conference at 7-2 just behind Exira, with an unblemished 9-0 mark, in Region 4 in 1A. The winner advances to the semifinal round against either Twin Cedars or North Mahaska, also at Des Moines Christian. DMC had been ranked in Class 1A earlier this month, falling out of the Top 15 rankings, just before the final poll was released on Oct. 15.
In 2A, league champ Guthrie Center (17-6) and runner-up Woodward-Granger (19-7) are still in action, but both face tough opponents in the quarterfinal round tonight. Guthrie Center travels to Manning to take on 9th-ranked IKM-Manning (28-2) while Woodward-Granger also faces a state ranked opponent, No. 15, Gilbert (17-6), but has the home court advantage as the match will be played in Woodward. If Guthrie wins, it moves on to face either Nodaway Valley or Griswold in the Region 2 semifinal match, also at Manning. WG would advance to the next round in Eldora in Region 3 against the winner of a matchp between Grundy Center and Dike-New Hartford, a longtime state volleyball power and the No. 3 team in 2A with a 38-3 season record.
A win over Madrid in the second round of regional volleyball action last Wednesday has put EG into the quarterfinal round tonight in Lake City, where the Hawkettes will square off against Southern Cal, the 12th ranked team in Class 1A.
EG’s 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 regional win at Madrid on Wednesday was the its second straight win over the Tigerettes. EG had swept Madrid in three straight games the previous Thursday in Rippey in both teams’ final regular season match, 25-16, 25-16, 25-13. That capped off a busy week, as EG had downed Panorama in three straight on Tuesday, following a 2-2 showing in 4 matches at a tournament in Walnut on Saturday.
EG has now won 5 of its last 7 matches. The win over Madrid in Rippey moved the Hawkettes to 6-3 in the final West Central Conference standings, good for fourth place. Last week’s win over Madrid in the regionals upped EG’s overall season mark to 14-6.
Southern Cal brings a 21-0 record into tonight’s match. The Mustangs swept Paton-Churdan 25-16, 25-6, 26-24 in regional action at Lake City last Wednesday.
The winner of tonight’s EG-SoCal match will take on the winner of Ar-We-Va vs. West Harrison in the semifinal round Friday at Denison. The opposite side of the bracket has Exira, ranked seventh in the state, taking on Coon Rapids-Bayard in Coon Rapids. The winner of that match moves onto the other Region 3 semifinal on Friday in Woodbine against the winner of tonight’s Woodbine and St. Albert’s match in Council Bluffs.
The semifinal winners will face off next Tuesday in Denison in the regional final. The winner moves on to the State Tournament in Cedar Rapids.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: This is one of the best--if not the best--volleyball season in EG school history. Coach Carly Tiffany has the Hawkettes firing on all cylinders, as they beat 6 of 9 competitors in the West Central Conference in three-game sweeps (best-of-five game matches), and lost by just two points in the fifth game of a five-game match against league champion Guthrie Center, the closest any league team came to the Tigerettes. The Hawkettes also beat CRB--last year’s West Central champion and a 1A state qualifier--twice this season, the first win coming in the championship of a tournament hosted by CRB.
EG will meet a seasoned team in Southern Cal. Like the Hawkettes, SoCal plays in a league comprised of both 1A and 2A teams, where they finished second at 5-1, losing only to East Sac, a 2A team, but coming back to win the conference tournament. The Mustangs made it to State two years ago and just lost out on a trip last year, falling to Schaller-Crestland in the region finals.
