Cooklin, Gannon Earn Diamond ‘High Honors’
EG PITCHER NAMED ALL-STATE SECOND TEAM
Graduated seniors Tyler Cooklin and Katlynn Gannon closed out the summer baseball and softball seasons for East Greene by earning all-state recognition. Cooklin joined an elite group of baseball athletes by being named to the Class 1A All-State Second Team by the Iowa Newspaper Association.
Gannon, a catcher and senior leader on a young East Greene softball squad that saw great improvement throughout the season, was named All State Honorable Mention by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
Cooklin, an outfielder and pitcher, helped lead the Hawks to their third straight 1A District baseball title and a berth in the substate game at Marshalltown, where they came up two runs short of advancing to the state tournament. Unheralded English Valleys (North English) beat the Hawks 6-4 and advanced to the tourney at Principal Park where they gave heavily favored Martensdale-St. Mary’s a run for its money, falling 2-1 in the opening round. MSt.M continued on with its nation’s longest unbeaten streak—set and broke during the district and substate rounds—to win its second straight 1A tourney with a 5-4 win over Kee (Lansing) in the championship game.
The Hawks struggled early in the season, dropping a number of conference games they were expected to handle, and finished in sixth place among eight teams in the Rolling Hills Conference with a 5-9 mark. However, they were just behind Orient-Macksburg and Glidden-Ralston at 6-8, so a win in their season finale over co-champion Iowa Christian (a shared program with Ankeny Christian) would have put them in tie for fourth-place and technically an “upper division” finish in their inaugural season in the Rolling Hills. Alas, Iowa Christian got the upper hand and won 8-4 to tie Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira (another shared program) for the Rolling Hills title with a 12-2 mark.
As it was, the Hawks put together a four-game winning season and won four of five games heading into district tourney action. The Hawks had the home field advantage, hosting the first round games and a semifinal matchup at Walt Anderson Field in Rippey, which moved them on to State Center where they upset state-ranked Northern University (Cedar Falls) to win the district title, 6-4.
And the Rolling Hills proved to be a group of formidable opponents. Orient-Macksburg, Walnut and East Greene all won district titles and advanced to substate, with O-M downing Nishnabotna, 13-3, to make it on to state. Nishnabotna was a qualifier in last year’s state tournament. Walnut fell to state-ranked Coon Rapids-Bayard, 2-0, which ended years of frustration in post-season setbacks, to return to the state tournament for the first time since 2007. It was the Crusaders’ fourth state tournament appearance. CRB won its first round game at state and almost upended MSt.M in the semifinals, falling by just one run, 5-4.
The Hawkettes ended their season on a high note with a two-game winning streak, a come-from-behind win 6-5 over O-M that ended on a sharp “heads up” double-play between Gannon and first baseman Jolee Wessling, and a drubbing of rival Glidden-Ralston, 14-2 in 3 innings.
EG hosted a first-round regional softball game at Dutton Field in Grand Junction against Ar-We-Va “under the lights” and put forth a good effort, falling 11-9, to end the season at 4-13.
Gannon was named second team all-conference in the Rolling Hills and freshman outfielder Chelsi Wilkens was named all-conference honorable mention. Gannon was also named to the Class 1A All-District Team for the Central District by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Twenty players are honored in each of six geographic districts by the IGHSAU in Class 1A: Central, West Central, North Central, Northeast, South and Southeast.
The Hawks reaped a number of post-season honors. Rolling Hills All-Conference recognition went to: Cooklin, senior, first team, outfielder; Wes Onken, senior, first team, first baseman; Aaron Lyons, senior, second team, outfielder; and Reed Ostrander, honorable mention.
Three of the Hawk seniors were also named to the all-district team. Similar to the IGHSAU, the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association names all-district teams, honoring 15 players on the first team and 15 on the second team for five geographic districts: Northeast, Northwest, Central, Southeast and Southwest.
Cooklin and Onken were both named first-team Central All-District and Lyons was named to the second team. Cooklin was named as an outfielder. He batted .478 for the season. Onken was named to a utility position, which honors his performance as both a pitcher and first baseman. He batted .380 and was 4-4 on the mound. Cooklin was 5-4 as a pitcher. Down the tournament trail, he was the winning pitcher against Colo-Nesco in the first round at Rippey and in the upset of Northern University in the district championship. Onken got the win in the semifinal round victory over Madrid at Rippey and Cooklin took the loss against English Valleys.
Lyons was named to the second all-district team as an outfielder and was known for his clutch plays from centerfield in key games. His batting average for the season was .373.
Onken will be heading to Coe College in Cedar Rapids this fall where he will be a member of the KoHawks baseball team. Coe finished the 2011 season ranked No. 27 among all NCAA Division III baseball teams this season.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: Hats off the all the Hawks and Hawkettes for great seasons. Along with Gannon, senior Jasmine Kinney was a steady force at shortstop for the Hawkettes along with seniors Tia Lowe, who played the first part of the season, and Molly Neese, who played third base for the latter two-thirds of the season. Great job, seniors, and thanks for all your efforts wearing on behalf of East Greene in softball, track, volleyball, basketball and cheerleading.
EG bids farewell to Cooklin, Lyons, Onken and fellow seniors Zach Dearborn (pitcher and shortstop) and Rob Ritchie, a key reserve on the baseball team. They have been part of a remarkable run in EG Hawk athletic success along with seniors Schyler Bardole in football, track and basketball; Bret Kersey in football and wrestling (as part of the JS/PC/EG shared team); and Nic Nicolaisen in football and basketball that saw the Hawks finish third among eight teams in District 7 8-man football and qualify for the state playoffs; finish as runner-up in the Rolling Hills to state tourney qualifier Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira in the basketball with a 15-3 conference record and 18-5 overall; score points at the state track meet for the first time in many years; and win a third straight district baseball title and a trip to the substate. These senior baseball players played key roles on the EG state tournament team of 2009, when they were sophomores. EG’s track points this year were earned by Ostrander, but Dearborn, Bardole and Lyons were standout sprinters for the Hawks and were part of the successful 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay titles for EG the last several track seasons.

Hawks Advance to District Finals
FACE NORTHERN UNIVERSITY OF CEDAR FALLS
A third straight Class 1A District baseball title is on the line for East Greene tonight when the Hawks take on Northern University (Cedar Falls) in the District 10 championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. at West Marshall High School in State Center.
EG rolled over Madrid 11-2 in a semifinal game in Rippey on Thursday night to advance to the title game. Wes Onken got the win, striking out 10 Madrid batters while walking just one. Onken gave up 6 hits, 2 runs and 1 earned run.
The Hawks banged out 15 hits on the evening with Tyler Cooklin going 3-5 with a single, double and a triple. Cooklin had one RBI and he scored 2 runs. Aaron Lyons was 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Onken was 3-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs.
EG moves on with a 12-13 record while Madrid ends its season at 10-20.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: The Hawks will have their hands full tonight with Northern University, a school affiliated with the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Northern U. is 22-8 and has been ranked in the Top 10 in Class 1A all season. Northern U. got by North Tama (Traer) at Traer in the opening round of district play, 3-2. North Tama was also ranked in the Top 10 this season.
But East Greene is shooting for its third straight trip to the substate. Two years ago, the Hawks won their district and then beat Grandview Park Baptist (Des Moines) to advance to the 1A state tournament. Last year, the Hawks upset Coon Rapids-Bayard on the Crusaders’ field in Coon Rapids in the district semifinal round and then scored an even bigger upset over unbeaten and fourth-ranked Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira in the district finals. EG fell to Ar-We-Va by one run in the substate game.
So, with two district titles and a substate championship to their credit, the Hawks are tournament-tested. And the pitchers are hitting their stride while the bats are finally warming up. If the Hawks can keep their field errors in check and not waste scoring opportunities (miscues and too many runners left on base have been weak areas all season), they can keep advancing in the post-season. They have the talent, they just need to keep fine-tuning the execution.
FOUR FOM LEAGUE ADVANCE: The Rolling Hills Conference is having a very good showing in the post-season. Orient-Macksburg, Adair-Casey and Walnut have all advanced to the district finals along with EG, so the conference has four teams still in contention.
Orient-Macksburg advanced to substate last year, so their success this year is no flook. OM beat East Union (Afton), 7-2, on Thursday and will move on to face Corning in the District 13 championship. Adair-Casey thumped league rival CAM (Anita) 16-6 and will now take on Walnut at Riverside (Oakland) in the District 15 championship. Walnut, which finished third in the Rolling Hills, beat co-champion Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira, 2-1, to advance to the championship game. The win snapped EHKE’s 12-game winning streak.
If the Hawks get by Northern University, they will advance to the Substate 5 championship in Marshalltown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, to face the winner of District 9 championship game between English Valleys (North English) and BGM (Brooklyn) tonight at HLV (Victor).
The OM-Corning winner will meet the Bedford-Nishnabotna winner in Substate 7 championship. Since Walnut is taking on league foe Adair-Casey, that guarantees one Rolling Hills team a spot in the substate. The Walnut-AC winner takes on either Coon Rapids-Bayard or West Harrison.
CRB beat Glidden-Ralston of the Rolling Hills in the semifinals. The Crusaders racked up another West Central Conference title this year and have been ranked in the Top 10 all year. Look for CRB to get by West Harrison and for Walnut to beat Adair-Casey with two facing off in the Substate 8 game in Denison on Tuesday.

The RH went 2-1 versus the West Central with EG beating Madrid and CAM taking out Guthrie Center, with CRB getting a win over Glidden-Ralston. Van Meter is one of five 2A teams in the West Central. The Bulldogs will face North Polk in a district championship tonight. Van Meter beat league foes Panorama in the first round and West Central Valley in the semifinals. West Central Valley had advanced with a win over conference member Woodward-Granger in the first round.
North Polk sidelined Des Moines Christian, the other 2A team in the conference, in the first round.

EG Advances to District Baseball Semifinals
HAWKS DOWN COLO-NESCO, 3-2, AT RIPPEY
East Greene upended Colo-Nesco, 3-2, in Rippey on Tuesday, July 12, to advance to the District 10 semifinals on Thursday, July 15. The Hawks will take on Madrid at Walt Anderson Field in Rippey at 7 p.m.
Madrid (10-19) advanced to the semifinal round with a 4-3 win over Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg) in the opening game of a first-round doubleheader at Rippey on Tuesday. NEH ends the season at 17-18.
The Hawks rode the pitching of Tyler Cooklin to get the win and move on in the tournament. Cooklin struck out 11 Colo-Nesco batters. He gave up 5 hits, 1 earned run and walked 3. He was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Hawk batters. Aaron Lyons was 2-4 with an RBI. The Hawks rapped 9 hits for the night with Tory Beger and Alex Gordon each adding a pair and Harrison Johnston adding a single.
The Hawks improved to 11-13 in beating a team they had downed 17-7 in 6 innings on July 1. Colo-Nesco bows out with a 13-16 record.
AROUND THE LEAGUE: The Rolling Hills Conference fared well in first-round district action, posting a glossy 6-1 record with one team, Adair-Casey, receiving a bye. League co-champion Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira beat AHST, 3-1, and will now face conference foe Walnut, which got by Riverside (Oakland) 5-0. CAM (Anita) beat Guthrie Center in a 3-2 thriller in 8 innings and will advance to face Adair-Casey. Orient-Macksburg beat Murray 3-0 and Glidden-Ralston beat Southeast Webster-Grand (Burnside) 7-0.
The only loser on the night was co-champion Iowa Christian Academy/Ankeny Christian Academy, a team that had the task of taking on Martensdale-St. Mary’s, the defending Class 1A state champions. Martensdale-St. Mary’s has been making headlines all summer. A few weeks ago, the Blue Devils reached the No. 2 position among winning streaks for all high school baseball teams in the country with a 76-game unbeaten streak. A 9-1 win over Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian Tuesday night moved them to 81 straight wins. The record is 83 games, which MSt.M will tie if they reach the district finals on Saturday. They can break the record with a win in the substate, which will advance them back to Des Moines to defend their state title.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s is now 38-0 for the season. Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian ends the season at 16-5.
HAWKS FALL TO ICA/ACA, 8-4: East Greene finished conference competition at 5-9 in the Rolling Hills with an 8-4 loss to Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian in a make-up game on Friday, July 8, in Rippey. An EG win coupled with a Glidden-Ralston loss to Iowa Christian on Saturday would have knocked the Blazers out of first place and moved EG into a tie for fourth-place with Glidden-Ralston. ICA swept both games to tie Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira for the conference crown and left East Greene in sixth place at 5-9.

EG Hosts Tourneys “Under the Lights”
POST-SEASON SB, BB ACTION IN GRAND JCT. & RIPPEY
The summer ball team “spotlight” will be shining on eastern Greene County this week and next as East Greene hosts a first round game in the Class 1A Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union regional softball tournament at Dutton Field in Grand Junction and the boys baseball team hosts the first and second rounds of the Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association district baseball tournament at Walt Anderson Field in Rippey.
The girls kick things off tomorrow night when
the Hawkettes host the Ar-We-Va (Westside) Rockettes in first-round softball action at 7 p.m. Admission will be charged for this game and the streets around Dutton Park will be blocked off to shift traffic through the main admission gates.
This will be the first “under the lights” EG game at Dutton Park this season.
East Greene, Madrid, Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg) and Colo-Nesco will compete in the first two rounds of district baseball at Rippey. Madrid takes on Northeast Hamilton in a first-round game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, with EG facing Colo-Nesco in the second-half of the first-round doubleheader at 7 p.m.
The winners of Tuesday night’s games advance to the semifinal game at 7 p.m. in Rippey on Thursday, July 14.
The Rippey semifinal winner will advance to the district finals on Saturday, July 16, at 7 p.m. at a location to be determined to face the winner of the semifinal game at North Tama (Traer). That side of the bracket has North Tama facing Northern University (Cedar Falls) on Tuesday in the first round and the winner advancing to the semifinal game on Thursday against GMG (Garwin), which drew a first-round bye.
The winner of District 10 (Rippey and Traer) will play the winner of District 9 in the substate at Marshalltown on Tuesday, July 19. That winner moves on the Class 1A State Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Teams in District 9 are Sigourney, Tri-County (Thornburg), English Valleys (North English), Keota, BGM (Brooklyn), HLV (Victor) and Belle Plaine.
The winner of the Region 7 first-round softball game in Grand Junction will advance to the quarterfinal round game in Coon Rapids on Friday, July 8. First-round action in Coon Rapids on Wednesday, July 6, has Coon Rapids-Bayard hosting Glidden-Ralston. The winner takes on Southeast Webster-Grand (Burnside) in a second round game on Thursday, July 7. The winner there advances to the quarterfinal round against the winner of Wednesday’s game in Grand Junction.
The winner advances to the semifinal round in Fonda on Monday, July 11. The Fonda bracket winner will play the semifinal winner of the Earlham bracket in the regional final in Carroll on Wednesday, July 13.

Madrid takes on Northeast Hamilton in a first-round game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, with EG facing Colo-Nesco in the second-half of the first-round doubleheader at 7 p.m.
The winners of Tuesday night’s games advance to the semifinal game at 7 p.m. in Rippey on Thursday, July 14.
The Rippey semifinal winner will advance to the district finals on Saturday, July 16, at 7 p.m. at a location to be determined to face the winner of the semifinal game at North Tama (Traer). That side of the bracket has North Tama facing Northern University (Cedar Falls) on Tuesday in the first round and the winner advancing to the semifinal game on Thursday against GMG (Garwin), which drew a first-round bye.
The winner of District 10 (Rippey and Traer) will play the winner of District 9 in the substate at Marshalltown on Tuesday, July 19. That winner moves on the Class 1A State Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Teams in District 9 are Sigourney, Tri-County (Thornburg), English Valleys (North English), Keota, BGM (Brooklyn), HLV (Victor) and Belle Plaine.
The winner of the Region 7 first-round softball game in Grand Junction will advance to the quarterfinal round game in Coon Rapids on Friday, July 8. First-round action in Coon Rapids on Wednesday, July 6, has Coon Rapids-Bayard hosting Glidden-Ralston. The winner takes on Southeast Webster-Grand (Burnside) in a second round game on Thursday, July 7. The winner there advances to the quarterfinal round against the winner of Wednesday’s game in Grand Junction.
The winner advances to the semifinal round in Fonda on Monday, July 11. The Fonda bracket winner will play the semifinal winner of the Earlham bracket in the regional final in Carroll on Wednesday, July 13.

East Greene Sweeps GR
HAWKS ROLL 11-2; HAWKETTES WIN BY ONE
East Greene scored a baseball-softball sweep at Glidden on Thursday, June 16, with the Hawks rolling over Glidden-Ralston, 11-2, in baseball, and the Hawkettes picking up a 9-8 softball win.
Wes Onken was on the mound for EG, striking out 14 Wildcat batters while giving up 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run and walking 5 in 6 innings of work. Reed Ostrander pitched one inning to help shut down the Wildcats, giving up 1 hit.
The Hawks had their bats working with 11 hits against GR. Ostrander hit a 3-run homer run and Tyler Cooklin had three hits in four trips to the plate. Onken went 2-3 with a double, and Tory Beger and Alex Gordon each had a double.
The Wildcats’ offense came from Zack Rohrbeck with 2 hits and Nate Christian with one hit and 2 RBIs.
The win over GR moved the Hawks to 2-3 in the Rolling Hills and 6-5 overall. GR evened its league mark at 3-3.
Hannah Onken got the win on the mound for the Hawkettes. She gave up 9 hits, 8 runs, 6 earned runs, and 7 walks, while striking out 6 GR batters.
East Greene had one of its best offensive nights of the season. Hannah Gunn had 3 hits, including a double and 2 RBIs. Jolee Wessling had 2 hits with Bailey Godwin, Katlynn Gannon, Molly Neese and Onken with 1 hit each. Godwin, Neese, Kinney and Onken each had an RBI.
The Hawkettes got on base with 9 walks from the GR pitcher, and heads-up play resulted in four stolen bases.
It was the first Rolling Hills Conference softball win for EG. The Hawkettes are now 1-4 in the league and 2-6 overall. Glidden-Ralston fell to 1-4 in the conference.
HAWKS FALL IN AR-WE-VA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
EG had a good showing in the Ar-We-Va Tournament on Saturday, June 11, with a 4-3 win over East Sac, a Class 2A school, which put them in the championship game against Newell-Fonda, which had advanced with an 11-7 win over host Ar-We-Va, a finalist in last year’s Class 1A state tournament.
Newell-Fonda got by the Hawks in the championship game, 10-7, to improve to 3-13 for the season. East Sac drubbed Ar-We-Va 15-2 in 4 innings in the consolation game to move its season mark to 10-4. Ar-We-Va started the season with a win but has since lost 10 straight games.
EG was rained out Monday, June 13, at home against Walnut. On Tuesday, the Hawks fell to Orient-Macksburg on the road, 4-3.

Hawks Fall to AC; Even League Mark at 1-1
OPEN SEASON WITH NO-HITTER AND 4-GAME WIN STREAK
After putting a four-game win streak together, East Greene has dropped two straight in baseball action to move its season record to 4-2.
The Hawks fell to Adair-Casey, 12-7, in Adair on Monday night, June 6, to even their Rolling Hills Conference record at 1-1. EG had won its league opener last Thursday, June 2, over CAM in Anita, 9-5.
The CAM win was the fourth straight, but the Hawks fell to Madrid in Rippey the following night, 12-10, for their first loss of the season.
EG opened the season in a big way with a 10-0 win over Grandview Park Baptist in Des Moines behind the no-hit pitching of Wes Onken. The game ended after six innings because of the 10-run rule. EG then beat Guthrie Center, 3-1, in its home opener on May 31, followed by a road win at Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg), 3-1, the following night.
The Hawks will look to get back on the winning track tonight in Rippey against Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira. EG takes on league-leading Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian Thursday night in Rippey.

Hawks Face Ar-We-Va in Denison
WINNER ADVANCES TO STATE; GAME ON KKRL 95.7
East Greene takes on Ar-We-Va (Westside) tonight in the substate championship in Denison with the winner advancing to the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament next week at Principal Park in Des Moines. Start time is 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on station KRRL of Carroll, 93.7 FM via live Internet streaming at www.1380kcim.com.
East Greene goes into the game as champions of District 15, after beating Southeast-Webster Grand, Coon Rapids-Bayard and No. 4 Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira. The Hawks are 19-11 and finished fifth in the 10-team West Central Conference with an 8-9 record. The Hawks finished a game behind Earlham (9-8). EG got a win over Earlham earlier in the season but their home-and-home rematch was rained out. If EG had played that game and won, they would have tied the Cardinals at 9-9 and finished fourth in the league. Coon Rapids-Bayard and Woodward-Granger won the conference with 17-1 records and Des Moines Christian finished third. All three of those teams are 1A schools, which gave the 1A teams four of the top 5 places in the 10-team conference, which was evenly divided this year with five teams each in 1A and 2A.
Woodward-Granger fell to top ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s 4-2 in Madrid on Saturday night. MSt.M (39-0) takes on HLV (Victor) (20-3) in the Substate 5 Championship tonight at Dowling High School in West Des Moines.
Ar-We-Va brings a 12-13 record into the EG matchup. Ar-We-Va beat Charter Oak-Ute, Woodbine and Woodbury Central (Moville) to win the District 16 championship.
The Rockets finished sixth in the nine-team Western Valley South Conference with a 7-9 mark. Three of the nine teams in the WVS are 2A schools, and 2A Logan-Magnolia took the title with a 15-1 mark. The other 2A schools are IKM-Manning and West Monona (Moorhead).

Ar-We-Va and EG had two mutual opponents this past season, Earlham and Glidden-Ralston. Earlham beat the Rockets 9-6 and Glidden-Ralston beat them 7-4. GR and Ar-We-Va faced each other again in the consolation game of GR’s four-team tournament on July 3 with the two teams ending the game in a 7-7 stalemate when it was ended due to rain. That game goes into the record books as a non-completed game and is not included in either team’s season record.
EG advanced with a big 8-5 upset of undefeated EHKE. The Spartan’s ace hurler Carson Smith struck out 15 Hawks but he gave up six hits and walked five.
“He didn’t have his good stuff and everything was flat,” EHKE coach Tony Peterson told the Atlantic News Telegraph. “And they were ready from the beginning.”
Three Hawks got key extra base hits off Smith. Tom Beger lead the Hawk barrage with a home run in the sixth inning that drove in two runs. Jessie Priest had a two-run triple in the first and Reed Ostrander slammed an RBI double.
Wes Onken started on the mound but was beaned accidentally in the helmet while batting. Through three innings he gave up three runs on four hits, walked two, hit one batter, had one wild pitch, and struck out three. Tyler Cooklin came on in relief to start the fourth inning and pitched the rest of the way, giving up two runs on two hits, one hit batter, four walks and striking out seven.
Aaron Lyons came through with another key defensive play when he nabbed a running catch in the sixth inning.
Ar-We-Va beat Woodbury Central in Moville 3-2 on Saturday night to take the District 16 title. Ryan Schurke got the win, giving up six hits, three walks and striking out six.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: These two schools are pretty familiar with each other as they square off in 8-man football each season and run in many of the same track meets in the spring. The last two seasons Ar-We-Va has been a non-conference football opponent but in previous years both teams were in District 2 along with Glidden-Ralston and Coon Rapids-Bayard. These same four teams will be reunited again this fall in District 7, where EG has played the last two seasons. Other schools in the 8-team district are Walnut, a holdover along with EG, GR and CRB from the D7 the last two seasons and Western Valley South members Charter Oak-Ute, Woodbine and Boyer Valley.
Hopefully all the beatings EG has taken on the gridiron from the Rockets will be enough of a motivating factor for the Hawks on the diamond tonight. Interestingly, Denison is on the other side of the three towns on Highway 30 that makeup the AWV district—Arcadia, Westside and Vail—so hopefully driving through this “Rocket territory” will get the Hawks extra-psyched by the time they reach the field in Denison. This will truly be a “Battle of the Lincoln” (Highway) as both schools are located in towns on the original Lincoln Highway as is Denison, site of the substate championship game.
EG rolled into last year’s substate game with a “losing” record (13-14) so they will not be taking the Rockets lightly. Their big wins over CRB and EHEK are of no consequence now because if the Hawks want to head back to the Principal they will need to put all their focus and intensity in beating the Rockets—the standard one game at a time clearly applies here.

EG Heads Down the Homestretch
14-YEAR RUN IN WEST CENTRAL IN FINAL WEEKS
East Greene is headed down the home stretch of its 14-year run in the West Central Conference as the softball and baseball seasons enter their final weeks.
When the bats and gloves are hung up for the year, the Hawks will leave the West Central behind and begin competition this fall in the Rolling Hills Conference.
Coming on the heels of last year’s march to the State 1A Baseball Tournament, the Hawks had high hopes of winning the West Central baseball crown in their final year in the league. As last week got underway, the Hawks picked up a big win against Earlham, 5-3, in Rippey. That win came after a good showing at a tournament the Hawks hosted on Saturday. EG took on two Class 2A teams and came out with a split. EG opened the tournament with a 10-4 win over East Sac County but fell to Interstate 35 (Truro) in the championship game, 7-4. EG had the same experience at I-35’s tournament earlier this season, beating another “East” (East Union of Afton) in the first game but losing in the final to the Roadrunners.
The Earlham game was significant as the Cardinals were runner-up in last year’s WC race and one of the pre-season favorites to win the 2010 crown. The loss dropped Earlham to 4-4 in the conference while putting the Hawks at 5-2, just behind co-leaders Woodward-Granger and Des Moines Christian at 7-0 and Coon Rapids-Bayard at 6-1.
However, the Hawks fell 10-9 to Van Meter the following night, June 20, to drop to 5-3 in the league. Each of the three league losses was by just one run. EG took another hit on Thursday, falling to league co-leader Des Moines Christian in Urbandale, 4-1. The Hawks did bounce back to beat Iowa Christian, 4-2, in a big game the following night on the Blazers’ home field in Waukee. That moved the Hawks overall record to 12-6. Iowa Christian is the defending Rolling Hills champion and vying with Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira and Glidden-Ralston for this year’s title.
The win over ICA gives EG a good look at how it stacks up against RH teams as the Hawks have already beaten GR this season. EHKE leads the Rolling Hills with a perfect 9-0 mark. The Spartans, in their first year of shared baseball between EHK and Exira, are 18-0 overall and ranked 5th in Class 1A.

EG got back on the winning track this week with a win Monday over Guthrie Center but fell to Coon Rapids-Bayard Tuesday night in Coon Rapids, 5-2. CRB started the week at 8-1 in the league and on Monday won both games of a doubleheader against Des Moines Christian, which had been unbeaten in the conference, to tie with Woodward-Granger for the league lead at 10-1 and drop DMC to third place at 9-2.
DMC fell again on Tuesday, losing at Earlham to fall further behind the co-leaders at 9-3 while Earlham improved to 8-4, good for fourth place, with EG at 6-5 for fifth. In a make-up game from a rainout earlier this season, Woodward-Granger beat Madrid, 9-0, to move back up on top of the league standings at 12-1, a half-game over Coon Rapids-Bayard. DMC disposed of West Central Valley, 12-2, in a game shortened by the 10-run rule after 5 innings, moving its mark to 10-3 and keeping the Lions in the league hunt. Elsewhere in the league, CRB downed Boyer Valley (Dunlap) in a non-conference game, moving its season record to 17-4, and Van Meter nearly scored the upset of the season, putting a real scare into Class 1A top-ranked and undefeated Martensdale-St. Mary’s, before falling 6-5.

HAWKETTES GET BIG WINS OVER DMC, CRB
While the Hawks were getting their hats handed to them on the baseball fields at Des Moines Christian and Coon Rapids-Bayard, the Hawkettes notched big wins on their hosts’ softball diamonds.
EG left Urbandale with an 8-7 win over DMC last Thursday to pick up its second win in the conference. The Hawkettes are short in numbers this season with just 11 girls on the roster—leaving just two on the bench. But the team has made remarkable strides from the beginning of the season and has become a formidable competitor. Just two nights before beating DMC, which had been ranked as high as 14th in Class 1A, the Hawkettes nearly upset Van Meter before falling 5-4 to the [then] Class 2A 12th-ranked Bulldogs.
Earlier in the season, DMC had pummeled the Hawkettes 13-0 in 5 innings in Grand Junction just one night after Van Meter had rolled over EG 15-4, so the Hawkettes are clearly making big strides. And they play in a power-packed conference. Five of the 10 teams in the West Central have been ranked this season, and two are currently among the state’s leaders. Woodward-Granger (22-1) is ranked 4th in Class 1A (moving up from 5th last week) while Van Meter (20-6) is 13th in 2A. Earlham, last year’s West Central champion, went on to win the 2009 State 1A Championship and is competing in 2A this year. Des Moines Christian and Madrid have also been ranked in Class 1A.
Against DMC, the Hawkettes pounded out 8 hits with Malarie Gilley and Katlyn Gannon each going 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a double while Tia Lowe went 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Gilley was on the mound for EG and the Lions pounded her for 14 hits, including two home runs by shortstop Annette Bosman. Gilley struck out 3, walked 1 and hit one batter.
DMC’s offense was undone by its defense as the Lions logged 6 errors compared to EG’s 2. Leah Harris, daughter of DMC coach Howard Harris, took the loss, giving up 7 hits, striking out 7, and walking 2.
EG fell to Guthrie Center 5-1 on Monday night but came back the following night to get a big win over CRB in Coon Rapids in 8 innings, 6-4. EG pounded out 12 hits in the win and got big boost from 5 Crusader errors. The win gave EG the home-and-home sweep over CRB and moved them from 9th in the conference standings to 8th, dropping CRB down to the nine spot.
EG fell to Earlham 7-1 in Grand Junction in a makeup game last night but still remains a half-game ahead of CRB.
EG takes on West Central Valley, winless in 15 games in the conference, tonight in a home game that might be played as a doubleheader, since the two teams need to make up game rained out earlier this season. WCV is the last game on the EG schedule, but the Hawkettes still have a makeup game with Madrid.
WG clinched the title last night with a pounding of DMC, 14-2, in just 3 innings, and is now 16-0. Van Meter is in second at 13-3. Earlham moved into a tie for third place with Madrid and DMC at 10-5.

The other half of the Fonda semifinal bracket gets underway Wednesday with Aurelia taking on St. Mary’s (Storm Lake) in Fonda. Newell-Fonda, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, gets a first-round bye and will meet the Aurelia-St. Mary’s winner in quarterfinal game in Fonda on Wednesday.

Teams in the Spencer side of the bracket are Ruthven-Ayrshire, Clay Central-Everly, Graettinger-Terril, Harris-Lake Park, Twin River Valley, West Bend-Mallard, Laurens-Marathon and Alta. First and second round games will be played at Milford, Lake Park, Algona and Alta.
Glidden-Ralston is in its first year in the Rolling Hills Conference, after nearly winning the West Central Crown last year while racking up a 13-5 league mark, just behind conference champion Earlham at 15-3. The teams met in the regional semifinals with Earlham prevailing 5-1 and advancing on to win the regional and the State 1A tournament in Fort Dodge the following week, finishing the year at 33-8. GR, with a number of seniors, finished at 23-8, one of its best seasons in school history. This year’s squad is in a rebuilding year with many newcomers. The Wildcats got off to a good start with a 2-2 mark in the Rolling Hills, just behind leader EHKE (4-0) and CAM (2-1) but the team has struggled as of late, dropping to 2-7 and last place in the six-team conference.
EG beat the Wildcats in a non-conference game Friday, June 11, in Glidden, 7-2. EHKE has clinched the Rolling Hills title with 9-0 record and one conference game remaining with Adair-Casey (2-5). EHKE is 16-6 overall and opens regional play on Wednesday at Avoca against AHST. Conference foes CAM, Adair-Casey and Walnut area also in the same region, along with Coon Rapids-Bayard and Woodward-Granger from the West Central.

EYE ON GJ SAYS: EG and GR were moved “up north” in this year’s regional alignment. With Grand Junction and Glidden on Highway 30, which forms a line cutting through the middle of the state, EG and GR are the bottom border of a region that stretches all the way to the Minnesota state line. Harris is in Osceola County and Lake Park is in Dickinson County, as are Milford and Terril. Both counties border Minnesota, as does Kossuth County, where Algona is located.
The opening round will bring together East Greene and one of its longtime rivals, Southeast Webster-Grand. Before East Greene joined the West Central Conference in 1996-97, it was a member of the Coon River Valley Conference along with Southeast Webster, Paton-Churdan, Glidden-Ralston, Newell-Fonda, St. Mary’s (Storm Lake), Pomeroy-Palmer and Schaller-Crestland. Pomeroy-Palmer is now aligned with Pocahontas in sports, and Schaller-Crestland is aligned with Galva Holstein, playing as Ridge View.
East Greene and the three schools that make up Southeast Webster-Grand—Central Webster (Burnside), Dayton and Grand (Boxholm)—were charter members of the Little Central Conference that was formed in 1959-60 when East Greene, Grand and Central Webster were newly formed “community” school districts. Stratford and Churdan rounded out the 6-team league. EG and CW along with Paton-Churdan were also charter members of the first West Central Conference in 1966-67. This being the 50th anniversary of East Greene, it is interesting to note that EG will ends its girls’ athletic presence in the West Central with an old West Central and Little Central rival in the post-season.
Comparing the two, SWG has a better overall record and is the only 1A school in the Twin Lakes Conference. The other five are all 2A. SWG is currently in third place in the league at 5-3 with two games to go. Prairie Valley and East Sac are first and second. Prairie Valley was ranked 12th in Class 2A early in the season, but then fell out of the rankings.
EG plays the same number of 2A teams (5) that SWG does and in a much stronger league. EG also plays an 18-game league schedule while the Twin Lakes teams play just 10.
The Hawkettes have performed remarkably well with such a small group (11 players) in such a large conference—10 teams and half them in a higher classification. Plus, EG is the smallest of the five smaller schools.
Anything that can happen in these tournament games, so look for the Hawkettes to give the Eagles a tough time in the regional opener.
Look for the West Central overall to make a solid mark in the post-season. The five 1A schools are playing in four different regions. EG is in Region 2 (final at Manson) while Madrid is Region 3 (final at Fort Dodge). Des Moines Christian is in Region 6 (final at Pella) along with 8th-ranked Lynville-Sully. Woodward-Granger and Coon Rapids-Bayard are both in Region 8 (final at Atlantic) with each team opening the tournament at home. If both WG and CRB advance, they would play each other in a quarterfinal game in Woodward. Tenth-ranked Treynor is in the opposite side of the Region 8 bracket, so a possible WG-Treynor match-up is possible in the regional final.
In Class 2A, Earlham, Van Meter, Guthrie Center, Panorama and West Central Valley are all in Region 8 and all in the upper half of the bracket. In the opening round on Thursday, July 8, Earlham hosts Nodaway Valley (Greenfield) and West Central Valley travels to Interstate-35 (Truro). Those winners play Friday at Truro. Also on Thursday, Guthrie Center hosts Audubon and Van Meter hosts Panorama. The winners meet Friday at Van Meter. Van Meter is also the site of the Monday night semifinal match-up between Thursday’s winners. The final is on Wednesday in Creston. Van Meter is one of the favorites in the region along with I-35, ranked 10th, and Wayne (Corydon), ranked 8th. Corydon is the site of the first two rounds with the semifinal to be played in Mt. Ayr. EG TO DISTRICT FINALS
Hawks Get By Madrid, 7-5
The third time proved to the charm for East Greene as they beat Madrid 7-5 in Rippey tonight in the semifinal round of District 12. The Hawks had previously dropped two West Central Conference contests to the Tigers this season, including a 5-3 loss in their season finale last Friday in Madrid.
The win upped the Hawks’ record to 12-14. Madrid ends the season at 13-13.
EG moves on to the district championship game against GMG of Garwin on Saturday in Ames. Game time is 7 p.m.
GMG (12-14) advanced with a semifinal win over Northeast Hamilton, 8-4, tonight in Ackley, after dispatching Colo-Nesco, 4-0, in the first round on Tuesday.
GMG finished in a tie for fifth place in the 9-team Iowa Star Conference, just ahead of Northeast Hamilton at 8-8. NEH finished the season at 15-11 overall.

Hawks Fall to League Leaders
East Greene dropped games to two of the conference leaders on Tuesday and Wednesday, after wining three of its four previous games.
Earlham downed the Hawks 16-6 on Wednesday in Rippey, moving the Cardinals into a three-way tie for first place in the West Central at 13-4. The Hawks fell to 7-10 in the conference and 10-13 overall. EG came close to ending Panorama’s title hopes but fell to the Panthers 6-3 on Tuesday in Rippey. Panorama is also 13-4.
EG got the week off a good note with a 10-2 win over Glidden-Ralston. The previous Friday the Hawks blasted West Central Valley 15-1 in six innings. Heading into the WCV game the Hawks had lost a tight battle to Coon Rapids-Bayard, 6-4, on June 30 after winning 10-3 over Guthrie Center the previous night.
One of the Hawks’ biggest wins of the season came on Friday, June 26, when they downed Iowa Christian Academy 3-1. It was just the second loss of the season for ICA, champions of the Rolling Hills Conference at 11-1. ICA (16-2) has victories over West Central teams DMC and Van Meter this year. It’s only other loss was to RC opponent Walnut, which handed EG a 5-3 loss in the first round of the Hawks’ tournament in Rippey on June 20. EG lost the consolation game in the tourney to Class 2A Woodward-Granger, 11-8. East Sac, also a 2A school, won the championship beating Walnut 15-3.
Tyler Cooklin got the win against ICA giving up 10 hits, 4 walks and striking out 3. He had a big night at the plate too, going 2-3 with a single and a double.
EG heads to Madrid for its last conference game of the season tonight. EG will host the first two rounds of the Class 1A District Tournament in Rippey next week. EG faces Southeast Webster-Grand and Madrid takes on Glidden-Ralston on Tuesday, the winners of the those two games will meet on Thursday.

Hawks Score Big Win Over League Leader
East Greene picked up a big win at Panora 8-4 on Tuesday night, June 16, knocking the Panorama Panthers out of first place in the West Central Conference.
The Hawks have now won three straight and four of their last five, moving their season record to 6-3.
Not only did the win knock Panorama off the top of the league standings, but it moved the Hawks up from seventh place to fourth place, where they are tied with Van Meter at 4-2. Josh Neese and Jesse Luther each hit home runs to lead the Hawks at the plate. Tyler Cooklin held the Panthers in check, giving up 8 runs, 3 walks and striking out 3.
EG was up 8-0 and held off a surge by Panorama in the bottom of the seventh, with Brock Lyons coming in to relieve Cooklin after the Panthers had notched four runs. Lyons got the last out, striking out the batter with the bases loaded.
On Monday night, the Hawks took care of Glidden-Ralston 12-2 in a game shortened to six innings. Last week the Hawks beat Guthrie Center on Monday 11-4, fell to Coon Rapids-Bayard 5-1 on Tuesday but came back for a win over West Central Valley 9-2 on Thursday.
Against G-R, the Hawks pounded out 12 hits led by Cooklin going 3 for 4 with 2 singles, a double and 2 RBIs. Bradley Clark was 2 for 3 with a single and a double, and Neese went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles. Aaron Lyons had 3 RBIs off his single hit in two trips to the plate.
Wes Onken got the win for EG, giving up just 2 runs, 1 walk and striking out 8 Wildcat batters. The Hawks had a great night offensively and defensively with 8 stolen bases and just 1 error.
The West Central Valley game saw the Hawks pile up 13 hits, 10 stolen bases and no errors. Jesse Priest was 3 for 3 with 3 singles and 3 stolen bases. Onken got the win with Brock Lyons relieving him in the final inning.

Look for CRB to also shine in the post-season as they host both district and substate baseball tournaments.

EG Beats Jefferson-Scranton in Season Opener, 4-2
East Greene made it a repeat in their head-to-head confrontation with Jefferson-Scranton last night in Jefferson, beating the Rams 4-2, to win their season opener.
It was a repeat of last year's matchup when EG dropped the Rams 11-7, which gives the Hawks bragging rights as the county's best baseball team two years in a row. But it doesn't get much easier for the Hawks, as they take their 1-0 record into tonight's matchup against Grandview Park Baptist in Des Moines. The Defenders went 21-11 last year and advanced to the state tournament. Last year, the Hawks dropped a close 3-1 game to GVP.
The Hawks' home and conference opener is Monday night against Earlham, then they travel to Van Meter on Tuesday and Des Moines Christian on Thursday, taking on two of the four teams that tied for West Central Conference championship last year. J-S (0-1) hosts Woodward-Granger Friday in a JV/varsity doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.

East Greene has picked up players from Paton-Churdan this summer in baseball and softball, but its combined enrollment with PC (93 + 33) keeps it in the middle range of Class 1A enrollments at 126. EYE ON GJ SAYS: This is a great start for the Hawks and it looks to be another strong year for the West Central Conference, as Van Meter has beaten Class 3A Winterset and now EG downs Jefferson-Scranton, one of the largest 2A schools with an enrollment of 290 (grades 9-11) where the cutoff between 3A and 2A schools is right around 300. East Greene has picked up players from Paton-Churdan this summer in baseball and softball, but its combined enrollment with PC (93 + 33) keeps it in the middle range of Class 1A enrollments at 126. Playing for the Hawks this year from PC are junior Jordan Burrell and sophomore Chris Anderson.

Hawks Open 2009 Baseball Season Tonight at Jefferson
East Greene takes on Jefferson-Scranton in its season opener tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Jefferson with the JV teams squaring off first with the varsity game to follow.
East Greene is coming off a 15-10 season that saw them battling for the West Central Conference crown up until the final game in a very tight championship race. The Hawks finished as runner-up with a 12-6 conference mark just behind four teams that tied for first at 13-5: Coon Rapids-Bayard, Des Moines Christian, Panorama and Van Meter.
EG beat the Rams last year 11-7 on a grand slam homer in the bottom of the seventh inning on the Hawks' home diamond at Rippey. J-S was playing as a 3A school last year, while East Greene is in 1A.
East Greene was originally scheduled to open the 2009 campaign against Southeast Webster-Grand last night (Tuesday) in Rippey but that game was rained out. The East Greene game is the home opener for J-S, which is a 2A school this year and in its second year in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Last year the Rams finished second in the Heart of Iowa large school division and were 17-13 overall.
