FULL DAY OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED, INCUDING PARADE, PLAY AND FOOD!
Grand Junction residents, friends and supporters are putting out the welcome mat for the annual Grand Junction Fun Day on Saturday, July 30.
Activities are planned for residents and visitors of all ages. “We want to encourage everyone to come to Grand Junction on June 30 to enjoy the great events we have lined up for the day,” says Pierre Kellogg, Fun Day Committee Chairman.
The day kicks off with the Fun Day Walk at Karber Field on South Ninth Street at 8:30 a.m.
A street fair with a variety of vendors will get underway at 10 a.m. at “Fun Day Central,” the block of East Hager Street between South 12th Street and South 13th Street, anchored by First Presbyterian Church on the west and First United Methodist Church on the east and the newly refurbished East Greene Sports Court (former tennis courts) in the middle. The street fair vendors will be open until 3 p.m.
Set up for the Grilling Contest will be from 8-11 a.m. at the south end of East Greene High School at the corner of Bennett and South 12th Streets. Pies for the Pie Contest and Auction are to be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church hall (basement) of First United Methodist Church.
On the opposite side of the EGHS school grounds at Bennett and South 13th Streets, the Naked Ladies Garden Club will host a “tea in the garden” in the new Rain Garden from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
“This is a wonderful addition to our school grounds,” says Kellogg. “Enjoy the various plant species and vegetation planted in the Rain Garden. Stroll the new walkways, take a rest on the benches and be sure to visit the Memorial Bricks area which celebrates our deep educational heritage in Grand Junction.”
The Fun Day Parade will step off at 11:30 a.m. Set up begins at 10:30 a.m. at the East Greene bus barn at the corner of Bennett and South 14th Streets. The parade route will head north on 14th Street to Main Street and then west on Main to Ninth Street and then turn south on Ninth Street to Bennett Street.
A food stand sponsored by Grand Junction Firemen’s Bingo will open at Noon at 12th and Hager and a car show will be held along 12th Street south of Hager. Car viewers and lunch goers will be entertained by the Town and Country Band which will be performing at the food stand area, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
At 1 p.m. sidewalk art and games for kids will be held at the Presbyterian church. The winning pies from the pie contest and other items will be auctioned from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the high school on 12th Street. Auction items include two ISU football tickets and tailgate, double bed size quilt, hair cuts from the Hair Junction, and a catered dinner for six. Judging for the grilling contest is at 2:30 p.m. at the grilling venue on the school grounds.
A cribbage tournament will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the air conditioned band room of the East Greene Jr.-Sr. High School building. The band room is accessed through the main doors of the school's north entrance.
The Off the Track Players of Grand Junction will present its afternoon performance of a one-act play, “Ladies at Poker,” at 3:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church hall, which is air conditioned. Bingo, sponsored by the Grand Junction Fire and Rescue Department, will be from 5-8 p.m. at the Community Center on Main Street. The Grand Junction Lions Club will serving supper from 5-7 p.m. by the Sports Court on Hager Street and First United Methodist Church will have an ice cream social at the church from 5-7:30 p.m.
A 3 x 3 basketball tournament will be held at 5 p.m. at the Sports Court.

A street dance and DJ will be held on Main Street from 9 p.m. to midnight with a BYOB beer garden. Plans are underway by several East Greene alumni groups to hold their class reunions at the street dance, with the Class of 1986 planning a 25th year anniversary gathering at the event.
Other activities throughout the day include free admission to the Kennedy Museum, located at Hager and 11th Streets.

Hawks Win District, Face North English in Substate
THIRD STRAIGHT DISTRICT CROWN FOR EAST GREENE
East Greene won its third straight district baseball crown Saturday, July 16, over Northern University of Cedar Falls, 6-4, at the West Marshall baseball field in State Center.
The win pits EG, winner of District 10, against English Valleys of North English in the substate game tonight at 7 p.m. in Marshalltown. English Valleys got by BGM (Brooklyn) 4-2 in 8 innings in the District 9 championship. The winner tonight advances to the Class 1A state baseball tournament July 25-30 at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Northern University (NU) had been ranked as high as No. 5 this season and upended No. 4 North Tama (Traer) in a first-round district game at Traer. And the Panthers looked hard to stop in the top of the first inning against the Hawks, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. But EG came back in the bottom of the first to post 2 runs and send a message to NU, which was on a 7-game winning streak, that it would be a ball game.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, EG was still down 3-2, but a combination of timely hits, an NU error and a hit batter lead to 4 runs and the Hawks took the lead 6-3. The EG defense stiffened the rest of the way, allowing just 1 more Panther run—securing the win and advancing to a third straight substate berth. Last year the Hawks were edged by Ar-We-Va 3-2 and two years ago EG beat Grandview Park Baptist to move on to the state tournament.
Tyler Cooklin picked up the win, pitching all 7 innings and giving up 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 3 walks and 12 strikeouts. The Hawks scattered 9 singles with 2 each from Cooklin, Zach Dearborn and Wes Onken and one each from Aaron Lyons, Tory Beger and Alex Gordon. Freshman T.J. Lint got the Hawks’ lone extra-base hit of the evening, a double.
The win evened the Hawks record at 13-13. They take on an English Valley team that is 8-15 after winning the district crown over BGM. NU ends its season at 22-9.

EYE ON GJ SAYS: English Valleys is a district with roughly the same enrollment as Guthrie Center, a longtime West Central Conference league foe. Neither team will be overlooking the other. EV is a member of the South Iowa Cedar Conference and ended a 6-game losing streak by beating HLV (Victor) in its season finale, and has now won 4 straight—half of its season win total. EV sidelined a solid BMG team (17-9) to win the District 9 crown.
EG just finished its first season in the Rolling Hills Conference after nearly 15 years playing in the tough 1A-2A West Central. But the power shifted to the Rolling Hills this season as three league teams are competing in three of the five substate championship games tonight. Orient-Macksburg (12-15) takes on Nishnabotna (19-5) at Bedford. Walnut (18-6) takes on Coon Rapids-Bayard (28-5) at Harlan. Game time for all substate games is 7 p.m.
CRB is the only West Central team to win a district crown and advance to the substate. Van Meter faced North Polk (Alleman) in a 2A district final, but lost 7-4. CRB entered district play as the No. 6 team in Class 1A and disposed of Ar-We-Va (Westside) and Glidden-Ralston before drubbing West Harrison (Mondamin) 23-3 in 5 innings in the District 16 final at Coon Rapids.
ABOUT ENGLISH VALLEYS: The English Valleys district is comprised of North English and South English. North English (pop. 1,041) straddles the county line between Iowa and Keokuk counties and is located about 40 miles southwest of Iowa City. South English (pop. 212) is in northeastern Keokuk County, 5 miles south of North English on Iowa Highway 149.
The school takes its name from the North Fork of the English River which flows eastward north of North English and the South Fork of the English River which flows eastward between North English and South English. The two branches conjoin 7 miles further east beyond the two towns at a point where Iowa, Keokuk and Washington counties meet. The English River then continues eastward until it meets the Iowa River between the towns of Riverside and River Junction, about 10 miles south of Iowa City.

Hawks Advance to District Finals
FACE NORTHERN UNIVERSITY OF CEDAR FALLS
A third straight Class 1A District baseball title is on the line for East Greene tonight when the Hawks take on Northern University (Cedar Falls) in the District 10 championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. at West Marshall High School in State Center.
EG rolled over Madrid 11-2 in a semifinal game in Rippey on Thursday night to advance to the title game. Wes Onken got the win, striking out 10 Madrid batters while walking just one. Onken gave up 6 hits, 2 runs and 1 earned run.
The Hawks banged out 15 hits on the evening with Tyler Cooklin going 3-5 with a single, double and a triple. Cooklin had one RBI and he scored 2 runs. Aaron Lyons was 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Onken was 3-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs.
EG moves on with a 12-13 record while Madrid ends its season at 10-20.
EYE ON GJ SAYS: The Hawks will have their hands full tonight with Northern University, a school affiliated with the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Northern U. is 22-8 and has been ranked in the Top 10 in Class 1A all season. Northern U. got by North Tama (Traer) at Traer in the opening round of district play, 3-2. North Tama was also ranked in the Top 10 this season.
But East Greene is shooting for its third straight trip to the substate. Two years ago, the Hawks won their district and then beat Grandview Park Baptist (Des Moines) to advance to the 1A state tournament. Last year, the Hawks upset Coon Rapids-Bayard on the Crusaders’ field in Coon Rapids in the district semifinal round and then scored an even bigger upset over unbeaten and fourth-ranked Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira in the district finals. EG fell to Ar-We-Va by one run in the substate game.
So, with two district titles and a substate championship to their credit, the Hawks are tournament-tested. And the pitchers are hitting their stride while the bats are finally warming up. If the Hawks can keep their field errors in check and not waste scoring opportunities (miscues and too many runners left on base have been weak areas all season), they can keep advancing in the post-season. They have the talent, they just need to keep fine-tuning the execution.
FOUR FOM LEAGUE ADVANCE: The Rolling Hills Conference is having a very good showing in the post-season. Orient-Macksburg, Adair-Casey and Walnut have all advanced to the district finals along with EG, so the conference has four teams still in contention.
Orient-Macksburg advanced to substate last year, so their success this year is no flook. OM beat East Union (Afton), 7-2, on Thursday and will move on to face Corning in the District 13 championship. Adair-Casey thumped league rival CAM (Anita) 16-6 and will now take on Walnut at Riverside (Oakland) in the District 15 championship. Walnut, which finished third in the Rolling Hills, beat co-champion Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira, 2-1, to advance to the championship game. The win snapped EHKE’s 12-game winning streak.
If the Hawks get by Northern University, they will advance to the Substate 5 championship in Marshalltown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, to face the winner of District 9 championship game between English Valleys (North English) and BGM (Brooklyn) tonight at HLV (Victor).
The OM-Corning winner will meet the Bedford-Nishnabotna winner in Substate 7 championship. Since Walnut is taking on league foe Adair-Casey, that guarantees one Rolling Hills team a spot in the substate. The Walnut-AC winner takes on either Coon Rapids-Bayard or West Harrison.
CRB beat Glidden-Ralston of the Rolling Hills in the semifinals. The Crusaders racked up another West Central Conference title this year and have been ranked in the Top 10 all year. Look for CRB to get by West Harrison and for Walnut to beat Adair-Casey with two facing off in the Substate 8 game in Denison on Tuesday.
SEVEN OF NINE WC TEAMS ARE OUT: CRB is one of two West Central Conference teams left in contention. The RH went 2-1 versus the West Central with EG beating Madrid and CAM taking out Guthrie Center, with CRB getting a win over Glidden-Ralston. The West Central’s other 1A team, Earlham, fell to top-ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s in the district semifinals.
Van Meter is one of five 2A teams in the West Central. The Bulldogs will face North Polk in a district championship tonight. Van Meter beat league foes Panorama in the first round and West Central Valley in the semifinals. West Central Valley had advanced with a win over conference member Woodward-Granger in the first round.
North Polk sidelined Des Moines Christian, the other 2A team in the conference, in the first round.

EG Advances to District Baseball Semifinals
HAWKS DOWN COLO-NESCO, 3-2, AT RIPPEY
East Greene upended Colo-Nesco, 3-2, in Rippey on Tuesday, July 12, to advance to the District 10 semifinals on Thursday, July 15. The Hawks will take on Madrid at Walt Anderson Field in Rippey at 7 p.m.
Madrid (10-19) advanced to the semifinal round with a 4-3 win over Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg) in the opening game of a first-round doubleheader at Rippey on Tuesday. NEH ends the season at 17-18.
The Hawks rode the pitching of Tyler Cooklin to get the win and move on in the tournament. Cooklin struck out 11 Colo-Nesco batters. He gave up 5 hits, 1 earned run and walked 3. He was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Hawk batters. Aaron Lyons was 2-4 with an RBI. The Hawks rapped 9 hits for the night with Tory Beger and Alex Gordon each adding a pair and Harrison Johnston adding a single.
The Hawks improved to 11-13 in beating a team they had downed 17-7 in 6 innings on July 1. Colo-Nesco bows out with a 13-16 record.
AROUND THE LEAGUE: The Rolling Hills Conference fared well in first-round district action, posting a glossy 6-1 record with one team, Adair-Casey, receiving a bye. League co-champion Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira beat AHST, 3-1, and will now face conference foe Walnut, which got by Riverside (Oakland) 5-0. CAM (Anita) beat Guthrie Center in a 3-2 thriller in 8 innings and will advance to face Adair-Casey. Orient-Macksburg beat Murray 3-0 and Glidden-Ralston beat Southeast Webster-Grand (Burnside) 7-0.
The only loser on the night was co-champion Iowa Christian Academy/Ankeny Christian Academy, a team that had the task of taking on Martensdale-St. Mary’s, the defending Class 1A state champions. Martensdale-St. Mary’s has been making headlines all summer. A few weeks ago, the Blue Devils reached the No. 2 position among winning streaks for all high school baseball teams in the country with a 76-game unbeaten streak. A 9-1 win over Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian Tuesday night moved them to 81 straight wins. The record is 83 games, which MSt.M will tie if they reach the district finals on Saturday. They can break the record with a win in the substate, which will advance them back to Des Moines to defend their state title.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s is now 38-0 for the season. Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian ends the season at 16-5.
HAWKS FALL TO ICA/ACA, 8-4: East Greene finished conference competition at 5-9 in the Rolling Hills with an 8-4 loss to Iowa Christian/Ankeny Christian in a make-up game on Friday, July 8, in Rippey. An EG win coupled with a Glidden-Ralston loss to Iowa Christian on Saturday would have knocked the Blazers out of first place and moved EG into a tie for fourth-place with Glidden-Ralston. ICA swept both games to tie Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira for the conference crown and left East Greene in sixth place at 5-9.

Keeping It Grand
SOUNDS AND SIGHTINGS AROUND THE “JUNCTION”
The Walt and Claudia Light home on East Elizabeth Street has a remodeled front porch. Across the street, Bud and Pat Fagen have upgraded their driveway and added a new paved frontage parking area… Work continues on the new roof on the former Slininger’s funeral home at the corner of Main and South 16th Streets. Also on the “roofing beat,” Beger Roofing just finished putting a new roof on St. Brigid’s Catholic Church on South 15th Street… The new memorial marker at the Lion’s Club was dedicated recently. The marker honors the efforts of Bob Clause and Doug Wessling and all the Lions’ Club members in building the Tree Park east of town and how that led to the establishment of the Lincoln Highway Welcome Center and Historic Bridges area. The handsome new marker faces out to U.S. Highway 30 and is located at the top of the U drive of the Welcome Center, just off the Lincoln. The front reads: DEDICATED TO THE MEMBERS OF GRAND JUNCTION LIONS CLUB WHO IN 1980 ESTABLISHED, PLANTED AND CARED FOR THE ORIGINAL TREE PARK SITE. And on the back: LIONS CLUB TREE PARK… We are still the “City of Trees—Tall and Beautiful” although a few of our leafy friends were “pruned” a bit by the recent high winds that have rolled through town. Some of the, um, “trees no longer living,” were felled by storms and have been laid to rest branch by branch, it seems, at the City Dump/Tree Cemetery on the west edge of town. Reports also indicate that “amateur logging” in various yards the last week or so guarantee already that the fireplaces of Grand Junction will have wood available through the next two winters!.. Business has been brisk at Municipal Swimming Pool as the hot weather has made the pool a respite for young and old alike… Numerous attractive Lincoln Highway heritage signs have been placed along Lincoln Highway through Grand Junction and beyond town on the Lincoln over to Jefferson. The signs feature the “Iowa Byways” marking and logo just above “LINCOLN HIGHWAY Heritage Byway” on the middle and bottom of the signs… Plans continue for the day-long Grand Junction celebration—“Fun Day”—on Saturday, June 30. Mark your calendars!

Hawkettes Beat Orient-Macksburg, 6-5
EG COMES FROM BEHIND FOR THE WIN
A double-play with one out in the top of the seventh inning preserved a come-from-behind softball win for East Greene, 6-5, over Orient-Macksburg on Thursday, June 30, in Grand Junction.
The Hawkettes trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but a combination of hits, walks and Orient-Macksburg fielding errors sparked a five-run EG rally to put the Hawkettes ahead, 6-5.
In the top of the sixth inning, an OM RBI triple drove in a run, cutting the lead to 6-5 with one out. EG pitcher Hannah Onken then got the next batter to deliver a little blooper to the pitcher’s mound which Onken threw to first baseman Jolee Wessling for the out. Wessling then fired the ball to catcher Katlynn Gannon, who tagged out the runner advancing from the third to home base, putting the cap on a nifty double play, ending the game and preserving the 6-5 win.
It was a big turnaround for the Hawkettes, who were blasted by the same OM team, 13-1, in 3 innings on June 14 in Orient.
The win snapped a six-game EG losing streak and moved the Hawkettes to 2-8 in the Rolling Hills Conference and 3-12 overall.
The Hawkettes were in action the night before, taking on Van Meter of the West Central Conference in Grand Junction, falling to the Bulldogs, 12-0 in 6 innings.
Van Meter blasted 15 hits while the Hawkettes added to their woes with 8 errors. EG had held the Bulldogs, ranked two weeks ago in the Class 1A Top 15, to a 6-0 lead through five innings, but a 6-run sixth inning doubled the score. EG was held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game by the 10-run rule. (Van Meter fell out of the rankings issued June 24.)
East Greene got 3 hits against the Bulldogs with Emily Jacobsen rapping a solid double into centerfield. Dani Hubbard was 3-4 and had 5 stolen bases for Van Meter.
The Hawkettes travel to Coon Rapids tonight to face Coon Rapids-Bayard in an 8 p.m. tilt and then return to Dutton Field in Grand Junction on Tuesday, July 5, to take on Glidden-Ralston at 5:30 p.m. in the conference and season finale.
EG will open regional play the following night in Grand Junction against Ar-We-Va (Westside) in a first round game. Game time is 7 p.m.
